There are many benefits to handwriting your thoughts out on paper or more commonly called “expressive journaling". Journaling has been known to ease the psychological distress that is caused by trauma. By putting things into words, you acknowledge the event, and you express yourself. This act alone helps reduce any anxiety associated with the event. However, journaling is not just to help you get through trauma but can be used to cultivate gratitude and bring joy into your life. Write down joyous memories, and when things are not going so well, you can reflect on those good days. This is not only self-care but a little self-therapy as well. So, go ahead and get yourself a journal and begin to write things down from time-to-time. It will be like having a personal portable therapist.
